Having been a Montana Horseman for well over fifty years and having ridden a great many trails throughout the state, let me say this is HORSE HEAVEN here in western Montana! No other geographic area can compare to the readily available places to ride and escape into wilderness!
The Bitterroot valley south of Missoula offers hundreds of trails awaiting you and your horse. On the west side of the valley, there are about seventeen drainages that have a creek and a trail leading into the wilderness. Most of these trails lead to lakes that populate the western ends of the trails. These lakes offer terrific fishing and camping opportunities!
When relocating to this part of paradise - The Bitterroot Valley, one finds that there is not enough time to explore each trail. As a suggestion, start a journal of each of your trail adventures so that when you get older and are not longer able to ride, you can reminisce about your travels. Incidentally, my father rode until he was ninety years old! Montana keeps you young and healthy!
Stay tuned to more ideas about riding. I will give you some thoughts about the gear you will need and the trails that offer the beginner great adventures.
